Dry needling is a western variation of acupuncture, and there is a growing body of evidence supporting dry needling‘s efficacy. The same very fine, sterile, single-use needles are used, however the technique is different. In dry needling, the needle is inserted into myofascial trigger points, which are tight and often tender points in muscles. The needle then stimulates a twitch response which causes the muscles to reset to their resting tone, similar to restarting a computer. This works to both release tension in tight muscles and activate muscles which are not firing optimally.
It is common for chronically tight muscles to be caused by postural dysfunction, stress, poor breathing habits, muscle inflexibility, strength deficits - so these causes will also likely be addressed.
